From the 1860s to 1950s, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino immigrants lived and worked in this historic San Diego neighborhood, and the area evolved into a multi-ethnic community of Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, and Filipino Americans. The African American “Harlem of the West” nearby is also remembered. The district overlaps the Gaslamp Quarter National Historic District.
The SDCHM hosts regular walking tours of the Asian Pacific Historic District.
